The Tight Deadline Question: Explain Your Priorities

Interviewers want to see how you choose between quality and schedule when time is limited, and when you share risk. 'I worked hard' does not reveal your decision criteria.

Name the constraint, then explain the criterion that determined the order of work.

1. Constraint — what made it tight

   State the deadline, goal, and quality bar briefly. Make clear why everything could not be done at once.

2. Priority — what came first

   Explain the criterion—customer impact, dependency, or risk—and any scope change or help you requested.

3. Result — date and quality

   Give the outcome, how you checked quality, and which risk you would communicate earlier next time.

• ✕Talking only about overtime or effort.
• ✕Claiming to do everything without a prioritization criterion.
• ✕Treating late risk communication as a success.

Record a 45-second answer and check whether you say what you chose not to do. Under a tight deadline, naming the trade-off builds trust.
