Career Goals in an Interview: Talk About the Next Direction, Not a Grand Title

Interviewers want to see whether your goals connect to the experience this role offers and whether you can grow with the organization. Vague or unrelated ambitions are hard to trust.

Focus on the work you want to get better at next rather than a distant title.

1. Now — capability you have built

   Briefly name the work you have done and the capability you developed through it.

2. Next — problem you want to take on

   Describe the problem or responsibility you want to explore more deeply.

3. Connection — why this role

   Explain what this role would let you learn and what your first step after joining could be.

• ✕Giving only a title such as 'I want to be an executive in five years.'
• ✕Spending the answer on a personal goal unrelated to the role.
• ✕Saying only that you want to learn with no evidence of current contribution.

Record 45 seconds and check for now, next problem, and role connection. If the goal is too broad, narrow it to what problem you want to solve with whom.
