Questions to Ask the Interviewer: What Lands (and What to Avoid)

Interview question

Do you have any questions for us?

Why do they ask this?

Asking questions isn't a throwaway after the 'real' interview — it's a final stretch where how seriously you've considered the role and the team shows. One good question leaves the impression of someone prepared.

How to say it

Don't ask what's already on the company's About page — ask what you'd need to succeed once you're in the role.

  1. Role & expectations

'In the first 3–6 months, what would success in this role look like to you?' — signals you're serious about the work.

  2. Team & collaboration

'What's the biggest problem or challenge the team is focused on right now?' — shows you want to understand the org.

  3. Growth

'What strengths do people who've grown in this role usually build?' — signals you're in it for the long run.

  4. Something from today

One question that follows from what came up during the interview — proof you were listening.

  5. Wrap-up

'What are the next steps?' is administrative — keep it short and last.

Common mistakes

  • 'No questions' — reads as disinterested.
  • Asking what's on the website or job post — shows you didn't prepare.
  • Asking only about pay, vacation, or remote — reads as caring only about terms (save those for the offer stage).
  • Testing the interviewer with overly aggressive gotcha questions.

Practice by recording

Prepare 3–4 in advance and say them out loud. Listen for whether each is about 'helping me do well' or just 'checking terms' — the tone shows. Practice inventing one on the spot from what came up, too.
